In the Münsterland region, hikers can follow historic paths. In memory of the Peace of Westphalia, which officially ended the Thirty Years War on 24 October 1648, a hiking trail connects the two main sites where negotiations took place, in Münster and Osnabrück. As far as possible, the route, which covers around 75 kilometres, between the city halls of Münster and Osnabrück, follows in the historic tracks of the envoys on horseback who became known as the “peace riders”. The Westphalian Peace Route not only leads along the ridge of the Teutoburger Wald forest, but also passes historic mills and grand buildings.
You’ll find more information on this and other hiking routes on a new hiking map that can be downloaded online. You can also mark the 370th anniversary of the conclusion of the peace by bike. The Peace Route covers a distance of 175 kilometres between the historic city halls of Münster and Osnabrück.
