For the first time, an entire region will host an international horticultural show (or “IGA”) in 2027. The honour was awarded to the Ruhr Metropolis by the Bundesgartenschau-Gesellschaft, the German federal horticultural show society. As a next step, the concept recommended in the feasibility study for the IGA 2027 must be examined in greater detail in collaboration with the cities and districts of the Regionalverband Ruhr (RVR), or Ruhr Regional Association, and other partners. With this in mind, a project and finance plan will be developed. The process is due to be completed by the end of 2017. On this basis, the political committees in the cities and in the RVR then decide whether the Ruhr region is able to host the IGA 2027.
Until now, the concept has included “gardens of the future”, with a focus on climate and energy. Between 20 and 25 parks and gardens in the region will be presented under the banner of “Our Gardens”. “Your Garden” also offers environmental initiatives and urban gardening projects the opportunity of participating in this major event.
In Germany, the IGA is usually held every ten years. In 2017, the international horticultural show will be hosted by Berlin.
