Mönchengladbach gets a „Borussia-Hotel“

A must not only for football fans: The football-Hotel will open in autumn 2018.

We had the chance to talk to Christian Esser, appropriate Project Manager, and asked him about the new „Borussia-Hotel“ which is planned directly at the football stadium.

Mr Esser, you are in the middle of construction work on a new, very special hotel in Mönchengladbach. Tell us more about it.

We’re not building “only” a hotel. With an area of 15,000 square meters covering seven floors, a new, multi-functional building will be created which will be directly connected to the stadium and administrative offices. On the ground floor, over an area of at least 1,000 square meters, there will be a “Fohlenwelt”, or “Foal world”, an interactive club museum with a large number of exhibits from our long history. The new fan shop will be located next door, also with an area of around 1,000 square meters. Three medical practices will move into the first floor. In the future, our team doctors will also have their practices there. The core of the new building, with a hotel lounge, suites and hotel rooms, will be located on floors 1 to 4, and constitutes 40 percent of the building. The fifth floor will contain office rooms for our administrative centre. The building management and Medicoreha will also be located on this floor. The sixth floor will be a rehabilitation and fitness centre with Medicoreha treatment rooms.

Who are your partners, and who is the operator?

As well as ourselves as the building owners, the construction work is being provided by Köster GmbH from Osnabrück, while sop architects from Düsseldorf were responsible for the planning; Geplan Design is providing the interior architecture. The Borussia Hotel will be operated by H-Hotels AG from Bad Arolsen.

When will the building be opened?

In the autumn of 2018.

How many rooms will there be? What fittings will be offered?

Overall, there will be 126 hotel rooms and five suites. The rooms will be fitted with a reference to Borussia, and will meet the standards for a 4-star hotel.

What does Borussia hope to gain from the new building? What target group are you addressing?

The aim is to enable fans to experience Borussia interactively. The journey times will also be shortened. The number of events in the BORUSSIA PARK will increase considerably thanks to the new building. To date, there have been around 450 events per year; following completion of the new building, this number will increase to between 750 and 800. These will include corporate parties, as well as private parties, conferences and conventions. The target group of the hotel will therefore range from fans through to business and MICE customers and the “leisure guest”. Overall, the new building will drive forward a commercial and sporting development. One goal is naturally to also increase the club’s turnover.

Will guests sleep in Borussia sheets?

The final design of the hotel rooms has not yet been decided, but every guest at the hotel will find football and Borussia motifs in many details of the furnishings.

Do you work with FIT travel operators, or with groups? Can you tell us the name of someone to contact for any event planners who might be interested?

The hotel rooms are marketed via the sales division of the H-Hotels Group. The conference and convention rooms and the gastronomy area are marketed via our sales team in the even and catering division. We and the H-Hotels Group will work closely together accordingly with all enquiries and at all interfaces.
