North Rhine-Westphalia is a hotspot of industrial culture. This is reflected very vividly and clearly on the new website of the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH). With around 80 of the 260 sites in Germany overall, almost a third of these special attractions are located in North Rhine-Westphalia. The tourist network connects over 1,300 industrial culture locations in 45 countries throughout Europe.
Users can restrict the huge number of offers through regional and thematic filters. Background information and biographies of people who themselves wrote industrial history provide an additional introduction to the topics of interest. With the mobile version, a local search can be made of all ERIH locations in the area, allowing users to make a spontaneous visit to an industrial monument.
The ERIH project is organised by an association which currently has 200 members in 24 European states, and the number is steadily increasing. The purpose of the association is to create awareness of our common industrial cultural heritage and promote the locations as tourist destinations. The current exchange of experience at conferences and meetings plays an important role in achieving this aim.
